Ferdinand stood on the brink of collapse, his body a map of deep gashes and heavy blood loss. His physical shell could no longer endure the forced release of his power.
With a wet cough, the dense swarm of insects thinned. Only a handful remained—the meager amount a D-class Transcendent could typically control.
[Ferdinand] "Damn it. Nothing goes my way."
He wiped the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand.
[Maximilian] "Waaaaah!"
Maximilian’s cry pierced the air. Ferdinand’s dark, crazed eyes locked onto Mrs. Becker and the infant in her arms.
[Ferdinand] "Then I’ll just kill the ones who deserve to die."
A jagged grin split his face. He intended to take Mrs. Becker and Maximilian to the grave with him.
[Ferdinand] "Attack them, pests. Kill the brat first."
The insects obeyed. They surged toward the mother and child in a dark wave.
Maximilian wailed. Mrs. Becker clutched the boy and sprinted away, but her limping leg failed her. She hit the ground hard.
[Becker] "No! Max, Max!"
Ferdinand wore the smile of a demon. As the swarm closed in on the child, the panicked Count shrieked an order to his man.
[Ulrich] "Rolf! Protect the child!"
Rolf moved on instinct. He scooped the infant off the garden floor.
[Rolf] "No, Young Master Ferdinand! Please, stop this!"
Rolf’s interference only fueled Ferdinand’s rage. He glared at the servant with utter contempt.
[Ferdinand] "You stopped me from killing that bastard last year, too. This is the second time you have dared to choose him over me."
[Rolf] "I did it out of loyalty! Young Master! I hid your gambling from the Count. I did everything to save you from execution—"
[Ferdinand] "SHUT UP!!!"
Ferdinand screamed. The noise grated on him, and his focus reached its breaking point. He glared at the child. The swarm accelerated, surrounding Rolf and the infant.
[Maximilian] "Waaaaah! Waaaaaah!"
The terrifying buzz overwhelmed the baby's cries. Suddenly, a stinger pierced Rolf’s arm.
[Rolf] "AAAAAGH!"
Rolf followed the Count's orders, but he valued his own life above all else. Seeing no escape, he hurled the baby onto the grass and turned to run.
[Becker] "MAX! MAX!"
Her voice cracked with horror as her son hit the dirt.
[Rolf] "AGH! AAAAAGH!"
Rolf tried to flee, but he was too late. The insects blanketed him, biting and stinging in a relentless cycle. He became a prisoner of the swarm. He flailed his arms, but the cloud didn't break.
The sickening sound of buzzing wings and tearing flesh filled the garden. Then, Rolf’s screams vanished. He slumped to the ground. The baby’s crying stopped as well.
[Becker] "Max, Max! MAX!!!!"
Her shrieks filled every corner of the estate. Just then, the D-class Transcendents finally arrived.
[Soldiers] "FERDINAND!"
They raised their rifles and fired without hesitation.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Bullets tore through Ferdinand’s shoulder and limbs.
[Ferdinand] "Ugh."
Since a commoner had attempted to murder a noble heir, the soldiers had the authority to execute him on the spot.
[Ulrich] "No, no! You promised to let my son live!"
The Count, face pale with shock, clung to the soldiers. Mrs. Becker watched him, unable to believe his actions.
That madman. What about my son?! What about Max?!
[Soldier] "Count, the situation has changed. I am sorry."
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The gunfire continued.
[Ulrich] "Stop! You can't kill him!"
The Transcendents ignored his pleas.
A final bullet pierced Ferdinand’s chest. He collapsed with a wet thud. As consciousness left him, the insects dispersed instantly.
[Becker] "What do I do? Max, Max!"
Mrs. Becker crawled toward the site of the attack like a madwoman. But where the swarm had been, the child was gone. Only Rolf’s cold corpse remained.
[Becker] "Max......?"
How could he be gone? Did the insects carry him away?
She looked everywhere, but the garden was empty.
He's gone. No! Why is he nowhere?!
The truth sank in. Ferdinand had ordered the insects to kill the child first. They must have dragged him off to—
Suddenly, she spotted Ferdinand’s fingers. They twitched.
Even at D-class, he was a Transcendent. His life force was stubborn. The bullet wounds began to close at a visible, though slow, pace.
The murderer lived while her son was gone. Fury consumed her.
[Becker] "AAAAAAAGH!"
Her eyes darted around until they landed on an axe left behind by the gardener.
I must end his life completely.
Lost to madness, she grabbed the axe and limped toward Ferdinand.
[Ulrich] "Vanessa! Vanessa!"
His voice didn't reach her.
[Ulrich] "No! Stop! Save Ferdinand! Vanessa!"
You dared to kill my child? Ferdinand, you demonic wretch.
[Becker] "DIE!"
The blade was sharp. As she swung with all her might, a cold, heavy sound rang out.
Thud.
Ferdinand’s head rolled away. The Count’s face turned white, as if he might faint.
Ferdinand was dead, but Mrs. Becker had seen his body regenerating earlier.
This is not enough.
She raised the axe once more, her mind shattered. Suddenly, a sound erupted from the distance.
[Maximilian] "Waaaah! Waaaaah!"
[Becker] "Max?"
She dropped the axe immediately and scrambled toward the sound. It came from beneath Rolf’s back.
It appeared that as Rolf fell, he had landed on top of the child. His body had acted as a shield against the insects.
[Maximilian] "Waaaah!"
[Becker] "Max. You’re alive! Max......"
Vanessa pulled the child into a crushing embrace.
Nearby, the Count stared at his son's corpse. His expression held a strange pity. He opened his mouth as if to speak, then closed it.
Only one reality remained. Ferdinand was no longer his son—not on paper, not by law.
[Ulrich] "Burn the body...... Take care of Rolf’s remains and give him a proper funeral."
It was the only choice left. Ferdinand was now merely a commoner who died attempting to kill a noble heir. He couldn't have a coffin or a grave. He would have been tossed into a mass pit for criminals. Burning the body was the only way to grant him a shred of dignity.
The four Transcendents bowed in apology for the chaos and collected the corpse.
The Count turned away, his face twisted in agony.
[Ulrich] "......"
The High Priest and his assistant stood speechless. The garden was a bloodbath. Only the sound of the crying child broke the heavy, mournful silence.
Then, a rhythmic sound approached—the crunch of carriage wheels on gravel. It was a peaceful sound, entirely out of place. A snow-white carriage rolled into the estate at a leisurely pace.
The carriage stopped in the center of the ruined garden. The door opened, and Odette stepped out, dressed in strikingly vibrant clothes.
[Odette] "Oh my. It looks like the baptism already ended."
While everyone else wore formal, somber attire, Odette looked as if she were headed for a picnic. She wore a neat pink dress and a wide-brimmed hat decorated with colorful flowers. She even fluttered a fan—the symbol of a high noble.
She offered a bright smile and spoke in a silky voice.
[Odette] "Dear me, I missed such an important event. What a shame."
She spoke of the baptism, but the Count and Mrs. Becker understood her instantly. She was talking about the deaths of Ferdinand and Rolf.
Odette’s smile had never been more radiant.
