Odette created the opening for Ferdinand's escape from the prison carriage.
Four D-class Transcendents had volunteered for the transport mission. Among them was a mole she recruited.
Allow Ferdinand to escape before they get too far from the estate.
The man came from a poor home and suffered under Ferdinand's command. He insulted the man's mother daily, fueling a deep hatred. When Odette shared her plan to end Ferdinand's life, the man accepted the deal instantly.
He would never speak of their arrangement. The crime of letting a prisoner go outweighed the mistake of losing one. Besides, his thirst for revenge ran deeper than any fear of the law.
The results brought utter satisfaction.
Ferdinand finally lay dead. In her past life, he treated her like a toy. He even attempted to rape her in prison.
How is it, Ferdinand?
How does it feel to be a fugitive for a crime you didn't commit?
How does the axe feel against your neck?
Does it hurt to know your family abandoned you?'
Odette died exactly like that in her previous life. She was hunted for sins she never committed and eventually died by Karl's axe. Now, Ferdinand died as a commoner—stripped of his title, his career, and his family.
As she looked at his corpse, the shadows of her past finally lifted. She offered a brief, cold prayer for the man about to become ash.
Goodbye, Ferdinand. Meeting you was disgusting.
Rolf likely shared that joy. He always bragged about serving a Transcendent. Dying by the very power he worshipped was a fitting end.
Odette turned her gaze toward the Count. He had stared at her since she stepped from the carriage. Pain turned his face a sickly pale.
So, you do value family.
She remembered her parents, whom he killed so easily. She remembered how the Count mocked her own death.
Five years ago, the woman Ferdinand murdered also had a family. Yet the Count offered no apologies; he only protected his son.
The look on his face now was a masterpiece.
[Ulrich] "What...... what are you doing here?"
[Odette] "Oh, I plan to live at the Albrecht mansion from now on."
His lips trembled. He couldn't hide his shock. The timing was perfect—the blood had barely dried on the grass.
The Count was no fool. He understood why Odette appeared now. She wanted to provoke him. She made no effort to hide her involvement in this chaos.
[Odette] "Is that alright, Father? This is my home, after all."
She smiled gently. His rage finally boiled over.
[Ulrich] "ODETTE!"
The scream tore from his throat like a wounded animal. He looked ready to kill her. But with the High Priest watching, he could do nothing. His scream was his only weapon.
[Odette] "Yes, Father. I am listening."
She answered in a light, airy voice. She acted as if she hadn't heard his blood-chilling cry. She stood there, terrifyingly beautiful and composed.
As soon as Shylock received the divorce settlement, he abandoned Sasha and Paula and returned to his own lands.
[Shylock] "You divorced because you couldn't handle Ulrich? Pathetic! You are a disgrace to this family. don't think of coming home!"
The settlement included compensation for Sasha's suffering—the years of neglect, the Count's affairs, and her unfair imprisonment in the convent. Yet Shylock pocketed every coin.
He gave Sasha a tiny fraction of the money. It was not enough to maintain her life as a former Countess. Sasha had to find a house in a wretched district near a steel factory. The air smelled of rot, and the nearby stream ran black with filth.
Paula stayed with Köndel. If he hadn't offered her a guest room, she would be rotting in that slum with her mother.
Recently, Paula sighed more often.
Why hasn't Sir Köndel asked me to date him officially?
She was obsessed with him. Since her mother had fallen to the status of a commoner, Köndel was her only hope for social survival.
He clearly likes me.
She had lived in his mansion for two years. During that time, Köndel treated her like a high-born lady. Despite his popularity in the marriage market, he never looked at another woman.
He even handled the lawsuit against the Count, paying for the lawyers and keeping her name out of the newspapers. He didn't even care about the dirty rumors circulating about the Count and Sasha.
[Gustav] "Only your heart matters, Paula."
He said the right things, but he never made a move.
Is it my status? Am I just a maid to him?
Paula remembered eavesdropping on a conversation between Köndel and his butler.
[Butler] "Master, surely you don't intend to marry a maid?"
Gustav hadn't answered.
She realized then why they were stuck in limbo. Even without relatives, Köndel had followers and servants. He couldn't ignore their disapproval entirely.
But I changed who I am!
A servant knocked on her door, interrupting her frustration.
[Servant] "Miss Paula. The Master asks if you would like to walk in the garden."
[Paula] "I will. Tell him I'm coming. And have the chef remake the cake. He's getting lazy. The cream is soggy."
[Servant] "......I will tell him."
Paula rose and put on her rings and earrings. As she walked down the stairs, she thought of the fortune teller, Gisella.
Your status as a maid is a barrier. But wait. An opportunity to increase your value in the marriage market is coming.
Paula had doubted her for a year, but the situation was finally changing. She didn't expect the opportunity to be this massive.
[Servant] "Paula. Saintess Charlotte has chosen you as her lady-in-waiting."
