The Paternity Test of Chaos and Terror
Amille, the Great Archmage and Hanael's mother, muttered with bloodshot eyes wide open.
[Amille] "Trust my words and run away immediately."
She parted her lips to say more but closed them. In the tense silence, Cassius spoke.
[Cassius] "Am I correct in my suspicion?"
She adopted a rigid attitude and nodded.
[Amille] "Yes. And I can handle everything myself."
Cassius set his lips firmly. Despite her words, her eyes looked clouded. Staring into her green eyes, an inner thought struck him.
The vibe differs entirely, but...... they look alike.
The word "resemble" usually points to a specific target, meaning one person looks like another. Yet this situation felt strange, as he couldn't pinpoint the exact person. Did Amille's face resemble Sierra, or did it resemble Hanael?
Cassius quietly weighed Amille's words and brushed his hair back.
[Cassius] "You look as though you have prepared yourself for death."
[Amille] "Because I have prepared myself."
He looked at her from an angle and spoke.
[Cassius] "I don't take orders from anyone who isn't Sierra."
Amille smirked at his statement.
[Amille] "You haven't changed."
A vague sentence, but he had no time to ponder it further.
[Prince] "Oh?"
At that moment, the Crown Prince entered the meeting hall. Cassius tightened his lips and stared at him. A sly grin remained on the Crown Prince's face.
Amille cast her eyes downward and quickly wiped the blood from her mouth. Fortunately, the Crown Prince focused all attention on studying Cassius' face.
[Prince] "Did you hear everything?"
[Cassius] "......"
[Prince] "My grand plan for the new monster war."
Cassius had heard absolute nonsense—a crazy warning to flee rather than a war strategy. Yet, he decided to nod noncommittally. A powerful knight's instinct urged him to do so.
[Prince] "Hey, Amille."
[Amille] "Yes."
As she answered, she hid the hand that wiped the blood behind her back. The movement was perfectly natural, so neither the Crown Prince nor Cassius realized she concealed a blood-stained hand.
[Amille] "Please speak, Your Highness."
[Prince] "How far did you get?"
She spoke at the Crown Prince's demand. She adopted a confident posture that masked her recent coughing of blood.
[Amille] "We discussed the opening of the gate to the demon realm, and the research suggesting that His Grace's strange actions during the last monster war caused the gate to open......"
Cassius narrowed his brow. This was a vile plot against the Ideos Ducal House. Yet a far more severe secret lurked behind the Crown Prince's actions. Cassius grit his teeth silently.
[Prince] "Duke Ideos."
[Cassius] "Yes."
Observing Cassius feigning a cold attitude, the Crown Prince lifted his chin with satisfaction.
Cassius watched the mocking expression on the Crown Prince's face in silence.
[Prince] "Do you know what happens to a swordsman during times of peace?"
He undoubtedly referred to the historic tale of Daniel, the ancient knight. Daniel had performed brilliantly in war, but the Emperor executed him in the end. The Crown Prince believed he had elegantly caught Cassius off guard by comparing himself to the Emperor and Cassius to Daniel. He looked expectant, waiting for Cassius' response.
[Cassius] "I don't know what will happen to me, but I know my duty. I will take a head."
[Prince] "......"
[Cassius] "To be exact, the head of the enemy commander."
With those words, he flashed a chilling smile at the Crown Prince.
Meanwhile, inside the Ideos mansion.
Hanael remained highly excited, playing with the doctors from the Hippo Kingdom. Befitting an adorable young lady, Hanael laughed cutely. Lanya and Kilo had already fallen completely under her spell.
Staring at the lovely Hanael, the two doctors smiled so wide their cheeks ached.
However......
[Kilo] "L-Lady Hanael?"
Kilo had applied elaborate clown makeup today specifically to entertain Hanael. Yet, she showed no interest in his clown disguise. Kilo, who had been smiling brightly like a proud peacock, slumped forward.
[Hanael] "Hmph. What is this?"
Her fingertips touched a heavy, rectangular black box sitting on the table. The box emitted heat, printing out paper like a press. Kilo nodded at the young girl's innocent question.
[Kilo] "It is a magical tool, my lady!"
Not wanting to be outdone, Lanya chimed in.
[Lanya] "It is printing the results of the test graph."
[Hanael] "Pwinting? Is it coming out? The graph?"
[Kilo] "Ah, yes. You are a genius!"
[Hanael] "Uh-huh!"
Hanael squared her shoulders proudly. Lanya and Kilo smiled awkwardly, subtly blocking the black box Hanael pointed at.
In truth, the object before them was a magical device designed to extract the third-stage paternity test graph.
As the first, second, and third stages of the paternity test progressed, the doctors had formed their own firm resolve. For the third-stage test, they collaborated with dwarves to build a device for tracking mana wavelength graphs and even secretly contacted an ancient dragon sage. Backed by steady funding from their benefactors, they successfully created a flawless device.
This paternity test worked by extracting a portion of each person's mana and placing it into the specially designed device to produce a graph, and the results emerged rapidly.
Hanael glared at the device with a pout. Watching the cute girl's narrowed eyes, Lanya asked urgently.
[Lanya] "Why? What is wrong?"
[Hanael] "Hmph......"
Hanael crossed her arms and pouted.
Lanya felt flustered by this simple reaction. She offered a gentle smile and prepared to speak. Just then, Hanael pointed to the chart.
As Lanya and Kilo turned their puzzled gazes to follow her finger, Hanael spoke.
[Hanael] "This, look at this."
[Lanya] "Yes?"
[Hanael] "Hmph......"
She pouted her lips and continued.
[Hanael] "Look, aren't they exactly the same?"
Kilo and Lanya stared at Hanael for a long moment before nodding hesitantly. Hanael's soft, cake-like cheeks puffed out fully and deflated.
[Hanael] "The colors are the same!"
Lanya and Kilo possessed eyes too; they froze upon looking at the three sheets of paper emerging from the device.
The sheets, completely white when inserted, had changed into a cobalt blue shade. This made sense, as the device transformed the color of their mana. Every sheet displayed an identical blue tint.
Lanya gripped the paper tightly and stabilized her breathing. Before analyzing the graph, a more important task remained. Lanya quickly spoke to praise the child.
[Lanya] "You are an absolute genius, Lady Hanael!"
The praise echoed emptily.
[Hanael] "Uh-huh!"
Unlike the oblivious Hanael, Lanya and Kilo grew deeply troubled. Kilo noted that all three graphs shared the exact same zigzag pattern.
[Kilo] "This test is......"
[Lanya] "Yes."
[Kilo] "......accurate."
[Lanya] "Perfectly accurate."
Finishing the brief exchange with Kilo, Lanya rose quickly from the sofa. She hurried toward their master, Hentel, who sat at the table reviewing documents.
[Lanya] "Does this mean she can finally receive recognition as the true young lady of the house?"
The moment Lanya spoke, Hentel, their master and a respected doctor of the Hippo Kingdom, set down his glasses. His expression differed entirely from the excited twins and the oblivious child. He swallowed a groan and approached Kilo along with Lanya. He snatched the graphs away to examine them closely.
[Hentel] "Hmm......"
Everyone listened intently to Hentel's thoughtful tone. Only Hanael wore a look of intense boredom, unable to comprehend the exact meaning of their conversation now that the attention shifted away from her.
[Hanael] "I'm bored!"
Lacking any praise, Hanael grew sullen and stood up with her tiny frame. Realizing it was better for her attention to wander elsewhere, she spoke.
[Hentel] "She is certainly the child of those two. However......"
[Kilo] "What is it? What's wrong?"
Hentel's dark gaze shifted toward Hanael. Lanya and Kilo also stared intently at the back of the child's round, acorn-like head.
Hanael tilted her head blankly, examining the various experimental instruments lining the walls of the villa.
Hentel cleared his throat a few times, looking uncertain about whether to speak. Flushes of red colored the cheeks of the excited twins. Yet, looking at them, Hentel's face turned deathly pale.
[Hentel] "She qualifies as their biological child. However......"
Hentel spoke haltingly.
[Hentel] "Something is wrong."
[Lanya] "Pardon? What is it?"
[Hentel] "The data confirms a biological match, but......"
He stared at Hanael and spoke softly.
[Hentel] "It looks different from typical paternity test patterns."
Hentel re-examined the graphs. Normally, when a biological relationship stood confirmed, the zigzag lines moved horizontally at a steady rate. Yet dark, deep blue stains covered the sheets. His face hardened.
[Kilo] "What does that mean, Master?"
Hentel closed his eyes and opened them.
[Hentel] "One of the three must be......"
[Lanya] "Yes?"
[Hentel] "No, never mind."
Hentel rubbed his eyes and spoke.
[Hentel] "Let us go deliver our report first."
Shifting away from Kilo and Lanya, Hentel softened his expression into a gentle look. Stroking his rough chin, he cleared his throat.
[Hentel] "My lady."
[Hanael] "Hmph......"
Hentel spoke in a sweet tone to Hanael, who stood with her hands clasped behind her back.
[Hentel] "Little lady?"
Witnessing this side of Hentel for the first time, Kilo and Lanya froze in sheer shock. They could never get used to their master acting this way. Hentel always pretended to be strict and detached in front of his disciples, but Hanael's cuteness clearly conquered anyone regardless of age or gender.
[Hentel] "Shall we go see your mother and father—ah, no, I mean, Lady Sierra and Lord Cassius?"
Hanael opened her sparkling eyes wide.
[Hanael] "Sierra Mommy, Cassius Daddy?"

Hentel had accidentally made a slip of the tongue before officially reporting to the Duke and the Grand Madam. He gaped, waving a hand in denial.
[Hentel] "Oh dear, this old man made a mistake......"
[Hanael] "Grandpa is a good person!"
Hearing Hanael's bold declaration, Kilo, still wearing his clown makeup, felt utterly lost. His own master had won Hanael's favor with a single sentence! It was infuriating!
[Hentel] "Oh my, how adorable."
From today on, he is not my master...... he is my rival......!
Ignoring Kilo, who was secretly forming a fierce resolve, Hentel laughed heartily and threw the door open.
Since Duke Ideos was busy, Hentel decided it would be best to report to the Grand Madam first, then go meet Sierra.
